The Reclusive Lauryn Hill Takes to the Stage
After making some appearances last summer, Lauryn Hill is back on stage this winter for more headlining dates. Boston and New York have already experienced the reclusive singer's act, and Atlantic City is on tap for late January with Miami coming in March.

Critics were mixed when it came to reviewing her Rock the Bells performances last year. One wrote, “While the manic energy Hill and her band was pouring out was appreciated, it meant most of the set list was more or less incomprehensible. No complaints about her rapping, but where was the singing? Either unable or unwilling to reprise her past vocal showcases, the choppy live renditions mostly had Lauryn chanting her way through choruses and letting the back-up singers do the rest.”

Rumors have it that Hill has also been in the studio working on the follow-up to 1998's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Though no release date has yet been set, Hill told MTV news, "We're getting closer. That's all I can say."

Elton John Plots Solo Tour
Fresh from a run of co-headlining dates with Leon Russell, Sir Elton John recently announced a string of solo dates in North America and Europe for 2011. He also recently announced the birth of his new son, Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, with partner David Furnish.

Though John's shows in Europe have thus far only included himself and a percussionist, the upcoming Greatest Hits Live Tour will feature his full band. Classics like “Crocodile Rock,” “Candle in the Wind,” “Rocket Man,” “Your Song,” and more will fill out the set list.

Reviewing John's Asheville concert with Russell in 2010, one critic observed, “The pop legend's sold-out concert was one of those remarkable musical moments that fans will talk about for years.”

No doubt fans that attend the upcoming Greatest Hits performances will feel the same.

Kid Rock Turns 40 with a Bang
On January 17, Kid Rock turns 40 and he's doing so with up to 60,000 of his closest friends. This Saturday, January 15, the artist formerly known as Bob Richie takes over Detroit's Ford Field to celebrate the occasion and kick off his Born Free Tour.

With his Twisted Brown Trucker band in tow and country rebel Jamey Johnson opening, the plan is for the Kid to be the Kid.

"I went on the merit of the music alone the last few years," he says. "This time we're taking out a set. I'm like, 'I got the music. Now let me give the people something to see,' so we're trying to figure out how do we create this set where it can turn into fire and strippers... and have an acoustic thing in the middle that's truly heartfelt and we can do our country thing."

Rush Takes Its Time Machine on Another Tour
In case anyone missed their 2010 performances, Rush is bringing the Time Machine Tour back around again this spring. As singer/bassist Geddy Lee put it, "We're playing better than ever, and I'm not sure we're quite ready to put that tour away.”

Critics tended to agree that this wasn't a case of less is more.

Of their 2010 show at Mohegan Sun, one reviewer noted, “'Brought Up to Believe' ('BU2B' for short), featured a thunderous riff from Lifeson alongside Geddy Lee's tight, punishing bass line. The band, also featuring drummer Neil Peart, was in fine form during the first set, playing with all the dazzling virtuosity Rush fans have come to expect over the past four decades. The second set, though, was where the Rush really let loose.”

The second set, for those keeping score, kicks off with “Tom Sawyer” and goes on from there to recreate Moving Pictures in its entirety. The reason being, according to Lee: "'Moving Pictures' is our most popular album and it's the one that seems to have passed the test of time most gracefully."
